The Associated Press seeks a Deputy Director of Polling, based in its
Washington, D.C., bureau.
The Deputy Director of Polling works closely with the Director of Polling in
commissioning original public opinion polls in the United States and
overseas on newsworthy and human interest topics.
The Deputy Director works with the Director and news managers to develop
ideas for public opinion polls, writes survey questionnaires, manages the
work of outside polling vendors, analyzes survey data and writes statistical
analysis programs, analyzes survey data for reporters and editors, and works
closely with the multimedia staff in creating graphics and interactives on
poll findings. Depending on qualifications, the Deputy Director may be asked

QUALIFICATIONS:
The Deputy Director of Polling must be both a survey researcher with a
strong background in the science of public opinion research, and a
journalist, with an understanding of the news business. The Deputy Director
should have training in quantitative social science research methods, solid
experience in managing public opinion research projects, and an interest in
news that includes but goes beyond politics and elections. Superior
programming skills in SPSS and other statistical analysis packages is
required. Minimum 5 years experience working in a survey research position.
Experience working for a news organization would be a major plus.

System Associate
CBS News
CBS News is hiring a Survey System Associate, who will work with our Systems
Manager on the CBS News Poll's computerized interviewing system. The volume
of polls CBS conducts has risen in the past few months; this is a new
position.
Responsibilities will include assisting in programming the questions into
the polling unit's computer system, running the system during polls and
preparing the software package that creates the final poll
cross-tabulations.
In addition, the Survey System Associate will assist in tracking the usage
of sample (telephone numbers called) for each poll and working with the
vender; compiling response rates for each poll as required by the American
Association for Public Opinion Polling's standards, compiling production
reports for telephone interviewers and archiving survey data.
At least two years of college is required, with some experience in computer
software programming. Hours for the position will be flexible, and will
include nights and weekends. Familiarity with CASES software package is

Project Associates assist senior staff with all aspects of qualitative and

The Institute for Survey Research, Temple University
The Institute for Survey Research (ISR) of Temple University is one of the
oldest and most highly regarded academic survey research units in the United
States. The Institute is actively seeking the third Director in its history.
This uniquely qualified individual will play a key role in shaping the
Institute's future focus. Since its founding in
1967, ISR has made numerous research contributions to policy planning at
local, state, and national levels through surveys using personal, telephone,
mail, and Web-based interviews; program evaluations; and focus group
research. The Institute has particular strength in field work, achieving
outstanding response rates and maintaining high data quality even with
challenging populations. The Institute has worked in the past with NIH,
SAMHSA, NIJ, ABA, Presidential Commissions, private foundations and other

Qualifications/Position Description:
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and will
direct all projects performed within the ISR as well as oversee all research
and technical/statistical activities, research, development and marketing
functions.
Flexibility exists for a tenure track or research track appointment
depending on qualifications of the candidate. The Director would be expected
to operate in an entrepreneurial spirit in setting strategic direction for
the institute in the current economic climate.
Responsibilities of the Director include: establish schedules and deadlines
for all ISR studies in conjunction with the Senior Study Director; develop
and manage department budgets, and oversee the outcomes of all ISR projects.
The ISR Director will develop and direct ISR policies and procedures, set
employee/departmental goals, and make strategic decisions concerning the
deployment of ISR resources. Additional responsibilities include develop and
maintain relationships with internal and external contacts, meet and make
presentations to Temple University employees, students, staff, and clients
in reference to the Institutes various projects.
Required Education and Experience:
PhD in the social sciences or related discipline; demonstrated leadership
experience such as Director, Associate Director or equivalent position in a
research or survey center.
